This is a little exchange between my favorite co-worker Josh, and a female customer. To set the scene, the woman is in her 30s, and probably a little tipsy (why do people go to pet stores wasted?). Josh is 18, adorable like a puppy, and kind of innocent.

Josh: Ma'am, can I help you with anything?
Woman: Yes, I need something to get the algae out of my tank.
Josh: What size tank do you have?
Woman: 55 Gallon.
Josh: How about a pleco?
Woman: A what?
Josh: The little guys in that tank who are sticking to the side.
Woman: Oh! A sucker fish.
Josh: Right.
Woman: Wow, look at 'em. I think I'm trading my vibrator in for a sucker fish.

Any other random info we might like to know: I've been working for Petsmart on and off for the last 3 years. I spent a year and a half in Specialty at one store, a month or two as UPC Specialist at another (though I spent more time in Equine or at a register), and now I'm back in Specialty. Yesterday marked day two at my new store, and the current Specialty manager approached me about moving into a management position (namely, hers. There's talk of her being promoted). Anyone have any words of wisdom about manangement positions at Petsmart? What's pay? How is it as Specialty manager?

Hello!! My friend Kendiefox told me about this community, and i think its infinitely cute. Oh, Livejournal. My name is Kayla, 21yrs old, and i'm from Houston, Texas. I've been working at Petsmart for 2 years, and i just transferred to another location to change from being a cashier to being a pet trainer. I own four birds (two lovebirds, a cockatiel, and a nanday conure) and a dog (standard rat terrier) and a boyfriend (all in a 680 sq.ft. apartment. oi.).
Um, that is all. :)

Hello everyone! I recently joined this comm not because I work for Petsmart, but because I'm thinking of getting a job at one of the Petsmart in the Boston area.

For the past two years I've been working as an independent pet sitter. I've had a great time doing this, and after a few years toiling in the mines of non-profit arts admin, working with animals makes me feel as if I've found my calling. I genuinely enjoy walking dogs and playing with kitties, but I also know that I'm on the low end of the totem pole in a service job such as this. As I'm growing older I would like to find a job with more stability and benefits, and working as an obedience trainer seems like it would be the best fit for me.

It looks like the Petsmarts in the Boston area are hiring an obedience trainer. Before I throw away all my clients and put all my chips on this, I had a few questions.

- What kind of training does one need to be a trainer at Petsmart?
- What is the job like? I'm assuming (from some of your posts) that everyone who works for Petco does a little bit of everything. What kinds of hours do the trainers work? What does their training consist of? What is a typical day in the life of a trainer?
- Are trainers typically hired PT or FT? (Would it make sense for me to hang on to some of my clients while working at Petsmart?)
- What is it like to work at the Boston area stores? A very vague question, I'm sure, but what I mean is: what are the people like, what is the atmosphere, etc.

Thanks for any insight you can give.
